Welcome at London Calling, a new feature of my weblog. In this section I will tell you about my adventures and experiences in London. So, if you care, you can read about the things I’m doing here. As I felt like I had to do something extra to make this section really cool, I made a logo (thanks to Piero Serra for the great picture) and I will also include a UK soundtrack in every episode. While reading my stories you can listen to the soundtrack by simply pressing the big play button on the MixWit tape below. Ok, all set? Let’s start with Volume 1, press play and start reading (Due to the MixWit music streaming service going bust, the soundtrack’s gone).
It’s almost there, in about a week I will fly to London to live and work in of the biggest and most exciting cities on earth. Although, that’s what people told me. The funny thing is that I’ve never even been to London. But almost everyone I’ve spoken about London ensures me that London will suit me like a glove. And I’m pretty sure about that too. Why? A couple of years ago I fell in love with New York, I promised myself to return to live and work in New York within ten years. I liked New York because of the purposiveness of all the people. Everyone walking in the street seemed to have a clear goal. They’re all busy doing something. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a New Yorker aimlessly wandering around. Here in Amsterdam, you see that a lot. People are more relaxed and tend to enjoy life more. That’s not a bad thing, but if you’re young, full of ambition and eager to work hard, Amsterdam is not the best city to be in. I think in this perspective, London is a lot like New York.
My last week in The Netherlands is fully booked. Tomorrow I will go to Texel (one of the Dutch islands) for a short holiday with my girlfriend. And as soon as I arrive back in Amsterdam, my family will join me for a ‘goodbye dinner’. The next day I’ll visit Rockin’ Park, a big rock concert with Lenny Kravitz and the Counting Crows among many others. The day after is all about the Euro 2008 final and on Monday I will party like never before during my farewell party. The day after I’ll pack and on Wednesday I will turn my back to Amsterdam and fly to London. It’s going to be some week.
